Some songs find relief in surrender. “My Darling,” the brooding new single from Singaporean electro-pop duo .gif, tries to survive post-apocalyptic ruins by accepting defeat, albeit temporarily. “Just cry my darling / nobody’s listening,” torch singer weish weeps over icy synths and throbbing beats. But as the trip-hop tune reaches for cinematic sweep, the vocals become more vindictive, getting even more indestructible as it outlasts dystopian nightmares and breaks deafening silence. The repeated lines hold hope for as long as it can, while the driving, arpeggiated rhythms lose steam, eventually giving in to calm. Bittersweet endings lead to new beginnings. With “My Darling,” there’s always a fighting chance at life.
